Help me solve the physics problem that will change our world?
In physics lab experiment, a student immersed 200 one cent coins (each having a mass of 3 g) in boiling water. After they reached thermal equilibrium, she quickly fished them out and dropped them into 0.240 kg of water at 20 deg C in an insulated container of negligible mass. What was the final temperature of the coins? (one cent coins are made of a metal alloy – mostly zinc- with a specific heat capacity of 390J/(kgK)).
Mass of coins m1 = 200 * 3 g = 600 g = 0.600 kg
Initial temperature of coins t1 = 100 deg C
Specific heat capacity of coins c1 = 390 J/(kgK)
Mass of water m2 = 0.240 kg
Initial temperature of water t2 = 20 deg C
Specific heat capacity of water c2 = 418.6 J/(kgK)
Let final temperature of the mixture = t
Heat lost by coins = heat gained by water
m1*c1(t1-t) = m2*c2*(t-t2)
0.600 * 390 * (100-t) = 0.240 * 418.6 * (t-20)
234(100-t) = 100.464(t-20)
23400 – 234 t = 100.464 t – 2009.28
23400 + 2009.28 = 234 t + 100.464 t
25409.28 = 334.464 t
t = 25409.28/334.464
t = 76 deg C
