How do you determine the currency value for each currency? for example why is British pounds higher than $US?
Japan’s economy is one of the strongest in the world but their Yen is still very low compared to other currencies. Look at China’s Yuan?
Currencies fluctuate in exchange rates just like stock prices fluctuate on the stock market.
There are many factors that determine currency exchange rates, but the largest are how much currency is out there (supply) versus how many people want to hold that currency (demand).
In the instance of the Yen, while there Yen are desired, because Japan has a very strong economic base (they are currently the third largest economy in the world), due to their central bank’s policies over the past 20 years and the high saving and investing rate of the Japanese populace, there is an exceptionally large supply of Yen held in the world.
The Yuan is mainly a function of government intervention. The Chinese government sets the exchange rate artificially low. In all reality, as the Chinese economy has strengthened (it is now the second largest economy in the world), the Yuan should have inflated, but due to the Chinese government’s policy of artificially devaluing the currency compared to other currencies, it has remained low.
The Great Brittan Pound (GBP) is a highly valued currency due to the strength of the British economy (I don’t recall where they are, but they are in the top 10 or so), and the limited supply of GBP. The GBP is used as a supplemental reserve currency by many countries (the USD is the primary reserve currency), so there is a lot of demand for GBP. The limited supply was created by the British government about 50 years ago when they switched from the sterling standard to a metric standard – which the country’s central bank purposely printed a limited supply.
