Can you make cake with numerous substitutes?
I wonder if you can use whole wheat or corn flour instead of white flour. Can you also use Splenda or sweat-and-low instead of regular sugar? What about I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter instead of regular butter and so forth? I’m hoping I can bake a cake this weekend with healthier ingredients. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I’m all ears if you do.
You can make most recipes healthier using the type of substitutions you suggest.
Don’t use 100% whole wheat or corn flour, just replace half of the amount called for. You need the gluten from all purpose flour for it to rise properly.
I am not convinced that artificial sweeteners are healthier and I know it isn’t an even exchange as they are much sweeter than sugar. What I usually do is decrease the amount of sugar the recipe calls for by 1/3 and you never even notice.
Some recipes can use applesauce instead of butter or shortening. This works quite well with brownies.
Experiment a little, it’s how you learn.
