Waltzing Matilda

Biography Of Scots Born Singer Alistair Hulett ( Final Installment)
This is the final installment of a three part article about one of Scotlands finest political songwriters Alistair Hulett. Alistair was a master of political song and the writer of many protest songs.
In 1995 Alistair created a collection of new music that owed little to punk rock yet everything to the Folk Revival which in fact had inspired him in the nineteen sixties. “Saturday Johnny and Jimmy The Rat” was originally meant as a solo affair in homage to the likes of EWAN MacCOLL, JEANNIE ROBERTSON and DAVIE STEWART, plus an acknowledgment of the time when the folk movement was really a vital political and musical force. Right at that moment, the renowned British fiddle maestro DAVE SWARBRICK was residing in Australia and Alistair toyed with the idea of asking Swarb to join him in the recording studio. Little or nothing more might have come of the notion had it not been for a phone call from a common good friend stating that Swarb had shared with him he would not mind working together with the chap who had written “The Swaggies Have All Waltzed Matilda Away”. Hence was cast a musical collaboration that has gained recognition from audiences and critics equally.
Of late Alistair Hulett joined up with with a couple of Yorkshire based musicians to form a five-piece, semi-electric group called The Malkies. This became Hulett”s first return to working with a full-time band since Roaring Jack called it a day in 92. Their very first recording was in fact “Suited And Booted” and to evaluate the no cost music samples not to mention order copies of the project, please check out the band’s website at www.themalkies.co.uk
Alistair passed away following a short illness in the month of january 2010. He had been a singer, songwriter, international socialist and revolutionary. A kind, gentle person who was entirely commited to struggling to get a better world; a world in line with the principles of justice, equality, respect and love for all of the human race. The world was a better place for knowing him and is a sadder place for his loss. He leaves a powerful legacy in his music and songs which can continue to bring encouragement to many who, just like him, believed a better world is feasible.
