Vincent Van
Who is Vincent Van Gogh and why is he so important to the society?

… okay… i am doing a project on vincent van gogh and i need to know about him more these websites dont have any information!….. so like i need information !! HELP ME!
however this project is due in 2 days!! and i have no time to read !!.. or go to the library !!>.. soo plzz HELP!

Which websites? Several on van Gogh do have significant amounts of information, but if you’re looking for a site that will tell you exactly what to say about him or a given work, forget it. It’s your job to study him but also to come up with intelligent things to say.

And you are always — ALWAYS — better off with books. No website can possibly offer the serious, in-depth information and analysis available in books and articles written by good art historical scholars.

As for van Gogh’s “importance to society,” I always shudder when students ask about that. I think some teachers are misleading them, so that they are confused about why they are studying art history in the first place. The truth is that van Gogh was very important to the history of art, that is, to cultural history, but neither he nor any other artist was vastly “important to society” at large. “Society” would have wended its way along perfectly well if he had never existed, though the history of art and culture would have been the poorer for his absence.

I’m an art historian, so you can take my word for it when I say that.

Read, read, read — websites, books, and articles. And then look, look, look, as closely and analytically as you can, at the paintings. That’s the best advice I can give you.
