Mary Ann Glendon, the Dalton native and Harvard University law professor who recently served as U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, has ignited a firestorm of debate by declining a prestigious award from the University of Notre Dame.
Glendon, 70, is turning down the Laetare Medal because she believes the university is violating Roman Catholic principles by giving President Barack Obama an honorary degree at the May 17 commencement ceremony, when Obama is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.
Obama supports abortion rights for women and embryonic stem cell research, two issues that are in conflict with the teachings of Catholicism.
Let Mary Ann Glendon receive a higher honor than the Laetare Medal. Indeed, it seems the Laetare Medal has already been degraded to where an honest person would not want it.
