Why do Republicans fixate on the word “republic” instead of “democracy?”?

The definition of the word republic, at least as it is used in the Constitution, is representative democracy. Yes, we know it isn’t a direct democracy – no country in the world is! That isn’t the point. We are still a democracy! (i.e., a country ruled by the people)

Every country calls itself a Republic, regardless of the type of government they actually use. The USSR stood for Union of Soviet Socialist REPUBLICS, and they were a dictatorship! Plato coined the term Republic, and he used it to describe a sort of enlightened monarchy!

Calling the US a republic, therefore, is pretty meaningless. The better word is democracy. That is the true ideal to which we should aspire.

I can only assume people who say “the US is a republic, not a democracy” actually want some sort of dictatorship!

Your thoughts?
Wow, most of you really need to look up “representative democracy!”

wrong …..the US is one of few republics in the world…..all of europe is pure democratic….meaning they elect their president..

here in the US we do not elect our president…the electoral college does that…..we have the privilege of NOMINATING a man for president.

To use the USSR as an example of a republic only an example of your ignorance. After all i assume you voted for tthe first socialist president in the history of the US….

the USSR was founded as a republic…yet it was soon taken over by its corrupt founders……ever heard of Stalins Purge? he killed all his political adversaries…….creating a dictatorship….

to say that every country in the world isnt a direct democracy is pretty ignorant…the french people choose their president…. the british choose their prime minister directly off of the peoples voice…. the chancellor of germany is also elected by popular vote……

lastly to assume that when i use the word republic is to assume i want a dictatorship is very naive…..extremely uneducated……you are a sad child who has fallen prey to the lies of the left…
