Should the United Nations have the power to remove any head of state or government from power?
I was thinking and I believe that the United Nations should have this power over the member nations in order to maintain an atmosphere of peace and harmony in and among nations. What do you think?
The UN charter recognizes the sovereignty of every state and so forced removal of the government of any one state would be a direct violation of its own charter…although that type of contradictory policy didn’t stop W from embarking on secretive and warrantless wiretaps. What’s more, is that the UN does not need to remove a head of state. It has shown flashes of brilliance in dealing with illegitimate and brutal regimes typified by the divestment campaign against the South African apartheid government. With Cold War tensions gone and the world security issues instead focused on fighting state-less terrorism, I think we will see a resurgence in the UN’s application of diplomatic pressure to forward human rights and peace. It’s going to have to get to work, though, because between the Darfur Genocide, Global Climate Change, the Myanmar Junta, Palestinian-Israeli disputes, Iranian and North Korean nuclear weapon programs, Pakistani-Indian territorial dispute in Kashmir, more than a decade of anarchy in Somalia, the Moroccan occupation of western Western Sahara (that’s not a typo), just to name a few, the UN has some serious state-based issues to be resolved.
And before everyone gets up in arms, I realize the UN has had a great many failings; I do not think that is sufficient to tarnish its successes.
