college mascots question?
have you ever wondered why certain schools have the mascots they have?
why does…..
UNC have a ram?
Miami have a duck?
Tennessee have a dog?
Alabama have an elephant?
and last but not least, why is the Air Force falcon blue?
Miami’s mascot is an ibis, not a duck. It was the first bird seen back in the area in large numbers after a big hurricane hit there in the late 20s, about the time Miami was starting their football program, and it stuck.
There are multiple theories on where the Alabama elephant comes from, and even Bama fans can’t really tell you that one.
I know Tennessee had a contest to determine which of several dogs would become the team mascot several decades ago and the winner was a bluetick coonhound, if I’m not mistaken, which is why their mascot is that specific breed of dog, but I don’t know why they decided on a dog in the first place. I guess they decided they needed a mascot but don’t know the significance of it being a dog.
I have no idea about the others.
Ole Miss is going to have a bear specifically because somebody decided they needed another mascot after going a number of years without one and a vote by fans decided on the bear. I’m sure in 50 years that’ll become one of those “why in the world do they have that mascot” types of mascots.
