Thaler Copy
What uniform is embellished with Maria Theresa thaler symbols?
At the flea market today I bought a dress for $2.16 and it looks like some kind of military uniform.
When I inspected it, the buttons have latin words so I googled the words.
Appartently the buttons are copies of a coin that was minted called the Maria Theresa thaler.
I was wondering if there are any uniforms that sport this design or if a designer simply created a dress with the interesting historical symbol.
The dress looks like a uniform in the way it’s designed.
It has shoulder pads & pulls very tight in the middle with lots of buttoning.
But if poofs out underneath where it buttons.
It’s hard to explain but I’m just curious about it!
Thank you!
I didn’t pull up any information about uniforms that used the design of the thaler, so I’m guessing it was just a design choice on the part of the dressmaker.
I can give you a little information about the coin, however. It is one of the more famous coins in the world, having been struck since 1780–interestingly, the date is never changed, so they’re all dated 1780–including the ones currently being struck. It’s been struck by over a dozen different mints, although currently it’s only produced in Vienna.
It’s called the Maria Theresa Thaler because of the portrait on the obverse (front) of the coin. Maria Theresa was Empress of Austria from 1740 to 1780. It has been one of the most widely used coins in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and is in fact still used in parts of North Africa and the Middle East
