how much are shillings?
i have five shillings two scottish one shilling coins (1948 and 1950) and three english one shillings
(1955,1958 and 1966)
A shilling was 12 old pence. (pre-decimal currency) When the currency became decimal, the shilling became the equivalent of 5 new pence – the new decimal 5p was the same size as the old shilling. For a while, shilling coins were still legal tender, counting as 5p. The same was true of the 2 shilling piece (10p) and the sixpence piece was the equivalent of 2 1/2 new pence.
Eventually, the pre-decimal coins the sixpence, shilling & two shillings were no longer legal tender, and then the 5p coin became smaller, to what we have today. The new decimal coin the 1/2p (about the same size as the current 5p) was also eventually phased out & although you might dig up one or two, they have not been legal tender for many years now.
