What You Need To Know About Russia’s Best Cities
When you mention Russian cities it is the capital city of Moscow and the elegant city of St Petersburg that automatically spring to mind as the perfect travel destinations for a visit. However, in this vast country there are several other cities you could choose to discover and explore.
Moscow – Moscow is definitely one of the cities you will want to visit on your trip to Russia though. This lively city has a reputation for luxury shopping, fine dining and the cool wine and cocktail bars where the millionaires hang out. You will also find artsy café bars and vibrant nightclubs where you can dance until you drop! Moscow is also a city of high culture and you will find the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the home of the Bolshoi Ballet here. Of course you will also be able to take in the traditional sights of Red Square and the Kremlin and also admire the various historic monuments and churches.
St Petersburg – St Petersburg was designed and built by Italian architects and this is reflected in the stunning neo-classical architecture you will see in this breathtaking city. Often described as the Venice of the North, Russia’s window to the West is also built amongst a network of waterways. St Petersburg has more of a European vibe to it than Moscow does, however there is plenty to explore for culture lovers. There are many fascinating museums here including the Winter Palace/Hermitage Museum which houses a wide collection of European art. For those who enjoy a cool, cosmopolitan experience then St Petersburg is the perfect city destination. The White Night season occurs during the summer months when the city rarely gets darker than your average twilight. This is the perfect setting for a spot of all-night partying and with a wide variety of cool clubs, bars and restaurants to choose from, people who enjoy nightlife should have no problem finding somewhere to hang out and soak up the atmosphere.
Vladivostok – It may take 9 hours to get to Vladivostok from Moscow and that’s by plane, but many curious tourists are now making the journey to this fascinating Russian city. Far towards the east – China and Japan are not too far away – this city might be cold but there’s plenty to see and do here. Set within a port this is the perfect city to explore on foot and there are a number of museums, forts and monuments to discover. You can also visit the birthplace of Yul Brynner, Brynner House which although not a museum as such is a fine example of art nouveau style housing.
Irkutsk – Located along the famous Trans Siberian Railway the city of Irkutsk is a popular starting point for people making their journey on the railway, however this city itself is also worth a visit. Many of the old traditional 19th Century wooden buildings can still be found here, and if you wander some of the city’s streets you will find some fine examples of this type of building. In other bigger cities in Russia the wooden buildings were torn down during the industrial period. There are several interesting museums in Irkutsk and some cool bars and restaurants for you to check out. The city is also a good starting point for those wishing to explore Lake Baikal and the Olkhon Island.
