How did Queen Mary manage to acquire the Imperial Easter Egg?
The Imperial Easter Egg was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II for Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna in 1901. This Faberge creation was kept in the Tsarina’s study at the Winter Palace before being confiscated during the Russian Revolution in 1917. It is decorated with gold and rose diamonds and moss made of green gold and “was acquired by Queen Mary in 1933″. How did she acquire it if it had been “confiscated”?
The Imperial Easter Egg in question is known as Mosaic. It was confiscated during the Russian Revolution.
The egg eventually came to the possession of the Antikvariat (traders of antiquity), who sold it in 1933 to an unknown buyer. In 1934 it was purchased from Cameo Corner (the celebrated Bloomsbury jewellers) by King George V as a birthday present for Queen Mary.
