Everyone knew that Bill Gutheridge, Dean’s right hand man, was leaving the cupboard high and dry once he left, and that someone would have to take the fall for a year or two after he retired.
Nobody wants to come in right after a legend leaves because there’s always a dropoff, and the only question is how bad the dropoff is going to be and who’s going to take the blame.
So Roy really always wanted to go back to UNC and screw KU in the process, he just wanted someone else to take the fall that was coming first and be the scapegoat.

he left right when KU was losing its star senior class and north carolina was getting a very highly tauted freshman class,i think roy williams is definitely in it more for his own success than the players.
