Queen Unc
My parents are from Trinidad and Tobago. Identity crisis here?

Both of my parents are from Trinidad, and I’ve been brought up with the culture my whole entire life. (I mean let’s face it, as American as I am, I’m still in love with doubles). Whenever I head to Queens, or to wherever there’s a large West Indian community, I feel like I’m too white. Whenever I try to infuse the culture I’ve grown up with into my life (I live in a white neighborhood), I feel too Indian and awkward, like I can’t be this or I won’t be accepted. How do I find a balance between being an American kid of Trinidadian descent?

And can someone please tell me who the heck Basdeo Panday is, and why Patrick Manning is a total dictator? That’s all I hear my mom and Dad talk about: UNC this, PNM that.
I’m Indian, but I have to act white, basically. lol.

Just enjoy both your cultures the West Indian and the American. Learn as much about your heritage, so you can appreciate it. You are over thinking things. I think your issue is of being of East Indian descent in America. You shouldn’t have to act “white”. Be yourself a person lucky enough to be a Trini and American. Definitely two great cultures.

Panday was a former prime minister of Trinidad, I believe he was the first of East Indian descent. I can’t comment on Manning, but I am sure the Trinidadians would not allow themselves to be governed by a dictator. It is easy for people to make assumptions when they don’t live somplace anymore.
