Kentucky Derby 2010 And Mint Juleps Are Not Far Off
The Kentucky Derby 2010 is almost here, kicking off at 6 in the evening on Saturday, May 1. It will be on NBC. Churchill Downs marks the beginning of the Triple Crown, with Belmont Stakes and the Preakness not far off. The race caps off the Kentucky Derby Festival, and true to form, quick cash will be bet on horses, mint juleps consumed, fortunes won and lost and hearts broken.
Kentucky Derby 2010
The Triple Crown will be started by the Kentucky Derby 2010. It would probably be worth a payday loans worth to go. The Washington Post has put up the odds:
- Lookin’ at Lucky – given 3 -1. The top slot is considered a dubious honor at best.

Those are the horses in the Kentucky Derby 2010, and now for something different. (I’m not just horsing around.)
Placing a definitely due Bourbon
The official drink of the Kentucky Derby 2010 is the Mint Julep. Kentucky is famous for it’s bourbon whiskey, and that is what they use in a Mint Julep. Drink responsibly and get a designated driver. (That driver should be sober.) Here we go:
Making a Mint Julep
You need:
- Mint leaves, and a sprig of mint for garnish
- Sugar
- Seltzer
- Bourbon
- A Collins, Highball or Old Fashioned type glass
- Ice
- A pestle or similar implement; a wooden spoon can work
Then:
- Layer the bottom of the glass with mint leaves, and add sugar if you want to, but you can do that later
- Generously grind the leaves
- Add as much ice as you wish, and crushed ice is best
- Add about 2 to 3 fingers of bourbon
- Pour in the seltzer
- Garnish with mint sprig and stir
- Cheers!
Ordinarily, you shouldn’t sully good bourbon with a cocktail, like good scotch, but get a decent one – the Kentucky Derby uses Woodford Reserve (very good) and Maker’s Mark will easily suffice as well. My favorite is 1792 Ridgemont Reserve.
