Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 Sets Sail
Pirates of the Caribbean is a franchise that isn’t going away any time soon, one of the film world’s hottest properties. The hype machine has a lot of gas in it at the moment, and projects are appearing beyond the fourth movie itself ‘On Stranger Tides’. It’s pretty widely accepted that the last two films weren’t up to much: inoffensively not all that great, worth paying to see but not critically acclaimed like the first. But critical reception rarely counts for anything anyway, and despite a somewhat limp wristed showing, there’s definite public sympathy for the franchise’s continuation.
Pirates of the Caribbean has something many blockbuster franchises have, but not to the same degree: it’s instantly accessible. Perhaps it’s the fact that we to can sail beneath the Tropical Sky of Barbados Holidays: you can’t fly an X-Wing in real life. There are few franchises that have made it to four blockbuster film releases, fewer of genuine value (hello Police Academy). Compare Pirates’ success with the Matrix franchise, which had a part two and three that were similarly filmed and unpopular. The comparison is interesting when you consider that the Matrix 3 left things rather unfinished. There was no imperative for a Pirates 4.
The end of the third film also more or less removed Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley from the picture, and they accordingly do not return. On Stranger Tides is the start of a new spin on our 17th Century Holidays to St Lucia. So this time we’ll see a lot more of a new crew, as well as further exploring the Jack Sparrow character. Johnny Depp’s character is unmistakeably the main event in these movies. Hopefully the script won’t simply pander to people’s Sparrow lust, and will add something to the character.
How do you know when you’ve made it in the movie business these days? Well, 2.68 Billion Dollars in Worldwide takings are a start. And if you can claim to have increased the volume of Jamaica Holidays, you may be able to discern some measure of success. But when your franchise joins the likes of Batman, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones in having a Lego game based on it, you know you’re big.
