Are Equatoguineans considered Hispanic?
Equatorial Guinea is a very tiny country in central Africa that was imperialized by Spain in the 19th century (correct me if i’m wrong please). During the period of imperialization, Spain exerted a powerful influence on most aspects of Equatoguinean culture, especially language. Spain occupied the nation until 1968, when it became independent.
Today, Spanish, French, and Portuguese are the official languages of the government, but Spanish is the only language spoken by 90% of the country’s 1 million residents.
Equatoguinean culture is a combination of European and African (mostly African) cultural influences, along with Latino influence.
Would you consider Equatoguineans to be Hispanic people (in a general sense), like Latin Americans and Spaniards?
if a dominican who is as black as can be, and a mexican of predominantly indigenous background can be ‘hispanic’ because of the language they speak, then i see no legitimate reason to exclude equatorial guineans.
