A question about 911?
Why did the United States chose the number 911 for their emergency services number?
In the UK we use the number 999 for our emergency number. Other Countries using 999 include Ireland, Poland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Macao, Bahrain, Qatar, Bangladesh, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The 9-9-9 format was chosen based on the ‘button A’ and ‘button B’ design of prepayment coin-operated public payphones in wide use (first introduced in 1925) which could be easily modified to allow free use of the 9 digit on the rotary dial, without allowing free use of any other number combination.
Is there any particular reason why the number 911 was chosen?
Because in the US and canada, we have private hospitals, emergancy services, so you had to call a number like 1-412-323-4993. Then a company came along and made the number EM1-111-1111 so all you had to remember was 2 numbers, then all 1′s.
