Home of the Melbourne Cup: The Flemington Racecourse

Situated in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, the Flemington Racecourse is a large area of 130 hectares (320 acres) originally built on Crown Land. Built on low alluvial flats, the racecourse sits next to the Maribyrnong River and was first opened for horse racing in 1840. In 1871, the Victoria Racing Club Act was passed, and the management of the Flemington Racecourse was handed over to the Victoria Racing Club. Shaped like a pear, the main racetrack of the Flemington has a circumference of 2312 meters and a straight of 430 meters. It also includes a special track for 1000-2000 meter racing. Racing is always done counterclockwise.
Often playing host to large, world-class horse racing events, the Flemington Racecourse can hold up to 120,000 guests. It also consists of three grandstands and, in the year 2000, opened another grandstand that cost $45 million. A bronze statue of the legendary horse race Phar Lap can also be seen at the Flemington Racecourse, which was gifted the statue on its 200th anniversary in 1988. A seven-panel mural created by the artist Harold Freedman can be seen in The Hill Stand of the Flemington and depicts the history of horse racing. This iconic horse racing venue was listed in the Australian National Heritage List in 2006 and is also listed in the Victorian Heritage Register. Each year, the Flemington Racecourse serves as the venue for extravagant horse racing events, such as the VRC Derby and the Melbourne Cup, as well as other events and parties that are attended by jetsetters and the most affluent individuals from Australia and across the globe.
