Brief History Of Japanese Language
Japanese is spoken by about 130 million people. A part of the Japonic-Ryukyuan languages, the language is spoken mainly in Japan. It is spoken by some people in Taiwan, Korea, Philippines parts of Chinese mainland and some Pacific Islands which the Japanese occupied during World War II and later. Japanese is also spoken by the Japanese emigrant communities of Hawaii, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, the United States and Australia. There is a decline in the fluency with which the language is spoken by their descendants. The official language of Japan as well as the island nation of Palau is Japanese. The vocabulary in Japanese language is borrowed from a number of languages. The most prominent language from which words are borrowed is the Chinese language. This resulted from the interaction that has a history of over 1,500 years. Words have been borrowed also from the Indo-European languages, mostly English during the 19h century, Portuguese in the 16th century and some Dutch in the 17th century. Japanese language is made up of three different scripts. These scripts are Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. The first two are syllabic scripts of the modified Chinese characters while the third is modified Chinese characters.
The Japanese taught in the schools is the standard form, Hyōjungo. This is also what is used officially. But Kyōtsūgo is the common form that is used. When writing the language, Kōgo which is the colloquial language, is used. Bungo, the traditional literary written language, is only sometimes used. Japanese dialects are many. The prominent is the Tokyo-type. The Kyoto-Osaka-type as well as the Kyūshū-type are the other prominent ones. The dialects of the outer regions as Tōhoku, Tsushima and southern Kyūshū are not understood by the mainstream Japanese. Though distinct languages, the Ryūkyūan languages, which are spoken in Okinawa as well as the Amami Islands are taken to be dialects of Japanese. The standard Japanese have been made popular by the media and education across the country.
Globally, Japan is ranked second to United States in terns of economic power. Japan is considered technological very advanced. The industrial and financial activities of Japan have spread out worldwide. This has resulted in increased interest in learning the Japanese language. Functional Japanese are offered as popular courses. This includes the Japanese vocabulary flashcards .
Japan, its culture and language, has fascinated many with the country’s emergence as a global economic power. Japanese words have found its way steadily into the English and other foreign languages. This includes such words as karaoke, haiku, karate, judo, ninja, rickshaw, samurai, tycoon, sudoku, sayonara, sumo, sushi, tsunami and many others.
