aquatic plants ok with large substrate in aquarium?
I am no aquarium expert, I am a novice. I have fairly large substrate (probably about the size of dime or penny) about two inches deep. Will rooted plants thrive if i add fertilizer (tetra flora pride). I already added plants and fish so it is too late to change substrate now.
You will be able to grow alot of plants with that substrate, but you will most likely need a good root tab for some plants like various swords, and lotus’s for instance, as well as the tetra product you use (which I believe is a liquid fert?). Trial and error really, you will find what works well for you. Most all my planted tanks are growing in inert pool filter sand, with just cheap root tabs for ferts and moderate <20 p.p.m. of naturally occurring nitrates. The plants do marvelously without the headache of constant trimming
p.s. it's never too late to change out substrate
