While you are in the Tamar Valley area, fifteen minutes south of Launceston via AllSeasons Campervan Hire Melbourne, there is a quaint town called Evandale which is a National Trust classified city. Evandale has a market every Sunday with lots of regional produce and crafts, so perhaps plan your visit around a Sun. if you appreciate local art and craft. For the train fans, Evandale hosts a model train and rail exhibition too.
In Feb of each year, Evandale is host to the Nation's Australian Penny Farthing Championships and as you might imagine, this kind of event is a little surprising. Only Penny Farthing owners, rivals and enthusiasts, would know how many Penny Farthing bikes are in Australia, however there should be enough to deserve having State Championships each year. Folk visit from every part of Australia for this event and Evandale shakes off the knackered village character for a while.
If Penny Farthing races do not interest you, try the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company instead and you'll be able to find them in the Ericvale Gardens amongst the topiary. They produce plenty of chutneys, relishes and sauces, including chocolate, berry and pasta sauces, which you are very welcome to taste. So some distance from being a knackered tiny village, Evandale has much more happening than meets the eye.
