Old All

How To Find Out When Your Tires Were Manufactured
Were you aware of the fact that driving on tires produced more than six years ago can be very dangerous? Even if the tires are recently purchased and show no wear, they are still potentially dangerous because older tires dry out and degrade with age and as a result are hazardous on the road. Tires manufactured more than 6 years ago are supposed to be thrown away even if they are in perfect condition and have never been used. Older tires have been exposed to oxygen and heat and may have degraded on the inside.
Certain tire manufacturers have claimed that age is a not an important issue when it comes to tire safety, however, other tire manufacturers such as Bridgestone and Firestone have stated that tires should not be sold if they are more than ten years old. All tire manufactured since the year 2000 signify the year the tire was manufactured by a four digit code. You can deduce when a tire was made by looking at the last four digits of the Tire Identification Number, which can be observed on every tire. This code starts with the letters “DOT”. The first two numbers signals the week and the last two numbers indicate the year that the tire was manufactured. You can find out the age of tires produced before the year 2000 by lookign at the last three numbers. The first two numbers show the week and the last number shows the year. For example, the number 106 means that the tire was produced in the 10th week of 1996.
Have your tires changed right away if they are older than 6 years in order to maximize driving safety. Remember to check the date on spare tires as well, as many cars have spares in the trunk that are quite old. It’s even possible for a tire to “dry rot”. In order to determine if your tires have dry rotted, check for cracks and discoloration. Making sure that your tires aren’t excessively old is extremely important in order to avoid spinouts and catastrophic accidents on the road.
