Valuable Discoveries Through Metal Detectors
That morning, amateur treasure hunter Tim Pearson was already up and about doing his metal detecting regimen in South Yokshire on one of its many fields, a thing he has been doing for the past six years, or probably even more. As a matter of fact, it was almost 7 years now and all he found for himself was a Roman coin. But that lucky morning in 2005, he was destined to find something that might just be the greatest discovery of his life through the use of the metal detector.
He said, “When I broke open the clod of earth the first I saw of the aestel was its flat back covered in mud. Seriously it looked like a piece of gold tinted foil, thus the milk bottle top similarity. Obviously, soon as I had the object in my hand I knew it was something special!”
That aestel, its pointer, the dimensions of which is thirty one millimeter high and weighing a little bit more than four grams, is now called the famous Yorkshire Aestel. The cast pointer is what monks have been using in the early years for reading manuscripts. King Alfred of 871 to 899, according to historical data, ordered the creation of some aestels for bishops to use in their translating the Regula Pastoralis which was accomplished by Pope Gregory I.
Only one among the few that were made is the Yorkshire Aestel, the most famous of them is one that was discovered in Somerset in 1693 which can now be found in Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It is called the Alfred Jewel. The Borg in Norway, Bidford Bobble in Warwickshire, Wessex Jewel in Wilshire, the Bowleaze Jewel in Dorset and Minster Lovell in Oxfordshire, these were some of the others.
The artifact is meant to cost at least 15,000 pounds or twenty-seven thousand dollars on the October 15 auction at Bonham’s and also with their sale of Antiquities in the London event.
And to think that Tim Pearson actually thought at the onset that it was just a milk bottle. Indeed, through the use of metal detectors in his treasure hunting regimen he was able to find treasures such as these.
