Why is south east England drier than the Netherlands?
I know that eastern England is drier than the western areas because it is more far away from the Atlantic Ocean. But why does Holland have an higher amount of annual rainfall if it’s even more eastwards an further away from the Atlantic? And the phenomenon is the same with Paris having an higher amount of annual rainfall than London.
It is to do with the prevalent direction of the weather fronts. Most of the ones going into Norfolk say are coming from the west – so will have already dropped most of their moisture on the rest of England by the time they reach Norfolk. In Holland the prevailing winds come from the North Sea so there is a lot of moisture in them and they dump the rain straight on the Dutch!!
