What was the last nation to rely on hard money (gold, silver) for its currency?
I assume there are no countries without fiat paper money today. What was the last nation to use commodity (ie real) money for its national currency?
I can’t remember the date when Switzerland abandoned the silver franc, but it was in my adult lifetime.
The problem was that the francs were going out of circulation and being melted down, because the silver in them was worth more than the purchasing power of one franc.I don’t pretend to know how this could happen – you’d think the two values would inevitably move in step – but that is what was said to be happening.
