Attack On Russian Militant Training Compound Results In Seventeen Slain
Doing their part to keep in control of their emense country, Russian officials are feeling the recent spike in civil unrest across the world. It is not an easy task, and in the wake of a suicide bombing at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport during a busy late afternoon, killing 37 people and injuring more than 150 others, they have been forced to seek justice.
Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev said; “We mourn the victims of the terrorist attack at Domodedovo airport. The organizers will be tracked down and punished.” The bomber, or ‘smertnik’ as they are referred to in Russia, was identified as 20 year-old Magomed Yevloyey, a resident of Ingushetia. Orchestrated by Islamist radicals from the southwestern region, this attack comes as part of a bombing campaign, fighting for an Islamist state in the North Caucasus region. They have threatened to direct their aggression on the Russian heartland before the next Presidential election in March of 2012. The January suicide bombing is proof of their previously reported threats that they will be targeting transport and economic entities. They have also reported threats directed at the 2014 Winter Olympics, scheduled to take place at the Black Sea resort town of Sochi, which some rebels believe to be ‘occupied’.
The attack has been felt across the world, bring that that it occurred at Russia’s largest airport. President Obama offered help to Russia and condemned the “outrageous act of terrorism.” Among the casualties were two British nationals, and citizens from Germany, France, and Italy were also reportedly wounded.
When events such as this take place, international travelers are reminded to take caution, and are urged to keep all crucial documentation, such as Russian visas, on your person at all times. The terrorist training site in Igushetia was discovered as part of a collaborative endeavor from Russia’s Investigative Committee, the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Interior and Defense ministries, as stated by Nikolai Sintsov, spokesman for the Russian National Anti-Terrorist Committee.
“As a result of a pinpoint airstrike of the Air Force, followed by a ground operation, a terrorist base which trained suicide bombers was eliminated,” Sintsov replied. In addition, he commented that: “an active accomplice of those bandits was eliminated, who was supplying them with food and medicine.” 2 suspected accomplices were also taken into custody by officials during the operation.
