Monkey King

The Monkey God Hanuman

If you have read the famous epic, Ramayana, you then learned that a mighty ape helped Rama to his journey to rescue Sita taken at that time by the demon king, Ravana. The might ape was Hanuman supposed to be an avatar of Shiva and symbolizes devotion, perseverance and physical strength.

Hindus believe that gods and goddesses incarnate themselves in human form during times of chaos and destruction. Based on the epic, Ramayana, Rama was the avatar of Vishnu, himself. Brahma, the creator, ordered other deities to incarnate as monkeys or Vanaras. Sugriva was the avatar of Surya, the god of the sun; Bali was Indra, god of weather and war; the preceptor of the Hindu deities, Vrihaspati came to the world as Tara and the wind god, Pavana, was Hanuman who was the strongest and wisest among the Vanaras.

His mother was Punjikasthala, who was associated with Vrihaspati. She was cursed to incarnate as a female monkey which would only be broken once she gives birth to an avatar of Shiva. On her human – monkey form, she was known as Anjana. She carried out passionate meditation throughout her life in order to gain the approval of Shiva. She was finally granted the boon to break the curse.

When the fire god, Agni, gave King Dasharath of Ayodhya a sanctified bowl of dessert for his wives so that they would bear divine children, a part of this was snatched by an eagle and dropped it to the place Anjana meditated while the wind god, Pavana, guided it to her hands. She ate this and the monkey god was born to the world. This was Lord Shiva and Pavana was his godfather where he got the ability to fly.

As a child, Humana was very naughty! He has even mistaken the sun as food and chased after it. Indra was angered and struck his jaw leaving him unconscious. Pavana carried him to Patala or nether world and air was gone from the earth. The creator, Brahma, begged him to come back and to soothe him, the gods bestowed lots of boons to the divine child making him very powerful, immortal and invincible.

When he was young, he misused his powers in order to annoy saints. When the sages found out that a child was the cause of all their troubles, they put a minor curse onto him to forget his divine skills and would only remember it when someone else reminds him that he has powers.
