The Advantages Of Luxury Train Travel
Luxury train travel is available in South Africa by means of the Rovos rail company which has its head quarters in Pretoria. In its early days Rovos bought Capital Park which had been a functioning old fashioned railway station. Now it is restored as a railway museum.
Enthusiasts and lovers of the steam train era will find much of interest in the Capital Park museum. After the ox wagons, luxury train played a huge part in the economic development of South Africa. They transported goods from the port cities to the gold mining and industrial heartland. Although they have all but disappeared now it is still possible to take a step back in time and enjoy the charm of the era.

People planning visits to South Africa may consider the different modes of travel that enable safe sight seeing. Modern coaches are enormous vehicles that seem squeeze themselves through impossibly small spaces with the aid of mirrors. In South Africa there is an unfortunate tradition known as ‘padkos’, or road food. This entails the unwrapping of greasy packages of sandwiches and other foods that are soon spread about. Coaches may also been held up by a massive program of national road repair. This causes long delays while passengers gaze out of windows, looking stuck.
Another option is to hire a car. Here one has the flexibility to choose out-of-the -way destinations. In a country like South Africa this can be problematic because some destinations are dangerous and tourists who wander in looking lost and laden with expensive cameras are instantly in the eyes of criminal predators.
Difficulties might confront even those hirers who do not go off course. On an open and apparently safe road a pair of traffic cops might be lurking behind a bank, with a brand new camera pointed at motorists. They are strangely uninterested in what happens in towns and cities where taxi drivers do as they like but emerge from cover to levy heavy fines on motorists who have left city chaos behind them and sped out on the open road. Such hazards will not arise on a train.
Between the tour coach and the hire car is the option of luxury train travel. One may walk about on the train as it trundles through beautiful countryside. The observation coach has wide deep windows to allow for maximum views, and there are restaurants and bars to allow for travellers to socialize as they travel, enjoying the landscape and the luxury of food and drink simultaneously.
Luxury train travel avoids some of the negative features of other travel modes. It offers relaxed and leisurely travel without the hassles of traffic and without the stresses of having to negotiate foreign, signs, maps streets and officials. It is worth looking into.
