Millenium Year
Is 2010 the final year of the decade, or does the next start a year from now on 2011?
It’s the 21st century now, because there was no “0″ century–just a first century A.D. as in our Western calendar. Numerically, because all the years begin with 20, shouldn’t it really be just the 20th century?
We are into the third millenium A.D., yet years start with 2. I know why it is done for millenium and century, but what about the end of a decade? Are we off?
Yes, 2010 is technically the last year of the first decade of the 21st century.
The first year was year 1 (0001, if you like four digits). The first decade – 10 years – included the years 1 – 10 (0001 – 0010). The second decade started with year 11. Same thing now, 20 centuries later.
The common view that years ending in zero start the next decade (or century, or millennium) is wrong.
But you’ve got to go with the flow, anyway.
