Lot Foreign
What time period did England have a lot of foreign invasions that they were able to fight off?
I’m thinking about writing a story that takes place in England in the past. The climax happens when the village is invaded and resolved when the invaders are fought off. Preferably I’d like the invaders to be part of an army from a foreign country which England is warring with. However I don’t know a lot about English history. Does anyone know the time period in which something like this would happen and who the invaders would be?
You could look at England during the period of the Viking invasions from around 850 AD to @ 1016 AD.
Or you could use the Norman invasion 1066 AD. The Normans succeeded, but it might be interesting. Other than that, unless you want to look at very early periods of Britain’s history, those are just about it for troops landing on British soil. The Romans set up a number of towns and outposts all around England and were always fighting off the locals.

After the Norman invasion, there were no others that actually touched land. The Spanish Armada and German bombings during WW2 were as close as an invasion that Britian came to.
You could set the story in the northern parts of England, close to the Scottish border. Quite a number of battles were fought back and forth. Or the English Civil War – Royalists vs Puritans.
Even earlier, ( early 1100′s) the battle for succession between King Stephen and Empress Matilda. This period saw battles rage back and forth across parts of England as they fought for the crown. It’s known as the period of Anarchy.
