Who actually killed Bob Marley?
While on vacation in Jamaica I discovered that a lot of Jamaicans believe that their own government killed Bob Marley. Does anyone know if there’s any truth behind this? I know that “officially” he died from cancer but a lot of other rumors have been floating around. Can someone please tell me if they have any proof that the Jamaican government was involved? Please don’t just tell me he died of cancer. thank you!
Nobody “killed” Nesta Robert Marley. He died on 5-11-81 at 36 of malignant melanoma that had metastasized throughout his body. In 1977, he injured his toe while playing soccer with friends. When the wound got worse instead of better, he saw a doctor and was diagnosed with the cancer. Amputation of the toe was immediately recommended by doctors but Bob refused because of his deep faith in Rastafarianism, which forbids amputation of any kind. Over the next 4 years, the cancer spread and eventually claimed his life. Bob Marley is a legendary figure and like other legendary people who’ve died in the prime of their lives, questions arise surrounding their deaths. In time, those questions become “conspiracy theories” hatched by well intentioned but misinformed people and these theories also become part of the legend. The fact that his medical records were never “officially” released give fuel to such theories. There is no credible evidence that the government of Jamaica had anything at all to do with Bob Marley’s death. In fact, a month before his death on April 20, 1981 he was awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit, the 3rd highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the government of Jamaica. In addition, he was given full honor in an official state funeral. It’s not surprising that people believe in a conspiracy theory but it’s most certainly far-fetched considering the facts.
