Historical information about the Papal Anthem of the Città del Vaticano in Rome

The music of the Pontifical Hymn was composed by Gounod for filial devotion to the Pope on the anniversary of the coronation of His Holiness Pius IX and the Papal Marches was performed for the first time in the afternoon of 11 April 1869, at the priestly jubilee of the Pope that day in St. Peter’s Square a large crowd had gathered to hear the extraordinary papal concert bands 7, belonging to as many corps and regiments stationed in papal Rome (Pontifical Gendarmerie with Master Roland, Line Regiments with the Master Mustache, with the Master Hunters Pezzini, with the Master Willimburg Zouaves, Foreign Police, with the Roman Legion Master Angelini, Dragoons Regiment), to the accompaniment of a choir of over a thousand soldiers, were given in honor of the Supreme Pontiff After the solemn duties of the morning in the Vatican Basilica. Applauded, the Marches of the pontifical Gounod was repeated several times on that fateful afternoon, as he wrote in L’Osservatore Romano the following day.

For the occasion, Pius IX, who had already received the good wishes and the diplomatic missions of various countries, with the presence of a crowd of some five thousand faithful in St. Peter’s Basilica, applauded appeared at the central loggia of St. Peter to respond to the cheers of the population filled the square and to attend the concert. The 7-band lined up in the stands, the appearance that the Pope had played the ancient Triumphal March dell’Hallmayr, the official anthem of the papal order, gave start to the concert following the same newspaper that the Vatican had announced the previous day as ” the new song written specifically for the occasion by Maestro Gounod, with footage of the choir performed a thousand of our soldiers. ” To say that the success was enormous given the new composition is an understatement. The organ of the Vatican April 12, 1869 informs us that “music was replicated several times.” It was played often, and even later became famous for its grandeur and its performance solemn, almost liturgical, but without becoming papal anthem for 81 years, although it had been called for the immediate realization.

The Pontifical Hymn of Gounod, on the eve of the Holy Year of 1950 was officially adopted, is very different from that made by Hallmayer in period style, with its brisk pace and lively as a waltz. Pius XII established to replace the anthem has been used since then with the Pontifical March of Gounod’s never forgotten, with its religious tone is considered more suited to our times. The music was performed in an austere ceremony Saturday, December 24, 1949, Christmas Eve and the opening of the Holy Year of 1950, for the first time as a new papal anthem, along with the old hymn almost wanting to enter the transition, music by Banda of the Palatine Guard of Honor (which was eventually dissolved, as noted, by Paul VI, as well as any other armed corps at the Vatican, the Papal Swiss Guard is not included) sided with all its departments in the Yard St. Damasus, after reading an agenda with which the Queen was informed about such replacement available. Today, though running it is no longer the glorious band of the dissolved Palatine Guard of Honor, although it is always the same ones that make up the current band calendar, the Pontifical Hymn of Gounod, now known throughout the world, is played in most solemn occasions in the life of the State, during ceremonies where there is the Supreme Pontiff or his representative.

The hymn is also sung when the Pontifical Vatican flag is hoisted, in a solemn and executed, in whole, only in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Father or at the official reception of foreign heads of state, together with innova National respective countries, as well as outside the Vatican when the Pope goes to the Apostolic Visit to a nation, or when a Papal Legate is officially received in a foreign country. Only the first eight bars are played in the presence of the flag State. When the honors are then rendered by armed units, the hymn is preceded by three blasts on the alert. Anyway, it is well to point out that the Pontifical Hymn can not be called a national anthem, the words of Master Antonio Allegra and talk to the Master Raffaello Lavagna hearts of those around the world see the See of Peter in Rome.
