Half Pence
How do you clean old coins, in particular old half penny?

a half penny was found in the dirt and is allmost unreadable

You should never clean collectible coins. Sixty or Seventy years ago it was the thing to do but today’s market discounts the value of a cleaned coin.

Having said that, if all you are trying to do is get loose dirt off try a hair drier or something to blow the dirt off. Don’t pick at the coin or rub it with a soft cloth. These leave very small tell tail signs that collectors look for to determine value.

Dipping it in various concoctions will leave signs of cleaning also. If you really think it would be worth it there are professional “conserving” companies that can help you out .

In the mean time enjoy a great find.
