Did you know- Colombia fulfilled a dream nurtured for decades when the country’s athlete Maria Isabel Urrutia won the gold medal in the Summer Olympic Games of Sydney 2000. Colombia, from Cali to Manizales, celebrated its initial ever Olympic title. She also became the primary Colombian lady to win an Olympic gold medal. She was born on March 25, 1965, in Candelaria, Valle del Cauca.
Baseball
Did you know- By the late Nineteen Forties, Colombia created Latin Yankee baseball history by winning the World Cup; its initial world tournament and the fourth by a team from South America (Venezuela won international championship 3 times, 1941,1944, and 1945). When that event, this Spanish-speaking nation won once again within the mid-1960s.In addition, the national team earned a gold medal within the Central American and Caribbean Games in the mid-40s. By 1976, for the third time, Colombia hosted the Baseball World Cup.

1975 FINA World Championships
Did you know- Cali -that is Colombia’s third largest city-won the right to host the 1975 FINA World Championships, one in every of the most important sports events on the planet. Cali became the second city to host the FINA Championships, once Belgrado (Yugoslavia, 1973). Four years prior to the Swimming World Championships, Cali had hosted the VI Pan American Games, the continent’s largest multi-sports event.
Central American and Caribbean Games
Did you know- The V Central Yank and Caribbean Games were held in Barranquilla, Colombia, within the mid-1940s. 13 countries and territories sent one,542 athletes to the Games. In Barranquilla, the Netherlands Antilles, Dominican Republic and Trinidad Tobago made their Caribbean debut. By 1978, once again, Colombia hosted the Caribbean Games.
Olympic Soccer Tournament
Did you recognize- By 1972, the team from Colombia finished in 15th place in the boys’s soccer in the Olympic Games of Munich (West Germany). The national team also participated in Mexico ‘sixty eight (9th), Moscow’80 (tenth), and Barcelona’92 (11st).
Pablo Restrepo
Did you know- By 1979, the nation’s swimmer Pablo Restrepo, an Yankee-trained athlete, was named as the most effective athlete of the year in Colombia. In the 1979 Pan Yank Games, he won a bronze medal in the lads’s 200m breaststroke and then was finalist at the FINA World Cup. Mr Restrepo was born on Might twenty one, 1960, in Medellin.
