Berlin Wall questions? ?
I have asked many questions regarding this subject for my midterm paper so I hope i get the same help .
1. Did the wall divide JUST East & West Berlin or ALL of East & West Germany?
2. Was the East side of the wall/ DDR controlled by East Germany or the Soviet Union . ( I have seen pictures of road signs during my research saying “Soviet zone next 3 miles”)
3. What were the stipulations if any, that allowed the East Germans to travel to the west side?
4. Was West Berlin or West Germany considered the “Free Zone” & was it more developed & prosperous than EG during those awful years?
The “Berlin Wall” proper only divided the City, BUT extended in a different format to cover the entire German border.
The Wall/ Fence was patrolled by BOTH DDR and Soviet troops… the pictures you’ve seen indicate the Soviet controlled zone of Berlin.
WEST bound traffic had only 8 crossings, and DDR & Soviet citizens had to have permits to travel to the west. There would be family pressures placed to ENSURE return.
West Berlin would have been considered the “Free-Zone”… the wall was constructed to PREVENT East Germans from fleeing to the prosperity of the West.
