Disappointing Film Year Culminates In Film Award Season: Baftas
Award season is in full swing and after some particularly insulting (if slightly hackneyed) speeches from a British Golden Globe host , it’s time for the annual, almost insultingly British love-in at the Baftas. The Baftas are often taken as the best indication of how the academy will vote at the end of January, though the extra British flavour to the event seems to come straight from an alternate universe where George III subdued the revolutionary armies by talking at them to death with Drama and good enunciation. This year couldn’t be more British even if its teeth went crooked: the British royalty are back on top. With 14 nods of approval, ‘The King’s Speech’ leads the nominations and is favourite to win Best Film, Director and Actor. Eight Nominations were forthcoming for the film at the Golden Globes, but the film only managed one win (Best Actor, Colin Firth who portrayed George VI). This was a truly intellectual drama, suitable for a room full of old industrialists clutching their whisky glasses.
The nominations largely come at the expense of Golden Globe darling ‘The Social Network’ which receives only 8 nominations. ‘The Social Network’ manages to sweep awards in every major category nonetheless, but against the might of Colin Firth, it’s difficult to see how it stands a chance.. Colin Firth is the key here, after all. Whilst he’s undeniably a fine actor, he’s also one of the favourite wine accessories for Bridget Jones’ style singletons sipping cheap wine on a lonely evening in. Danny Boyle is up again for Best Director for ‘hand trapped under rock’ thriller 127 hours. More British Bias? Perhaps, but Boyle has been long since accepted as a Hollywood darling.
Don’t let it be said that there isn’t some credibility to the Baftas though. Last year’s ‘Hurt Locker’ win was mirrored by the Academy Award results. But then ‘Hurt Locker’ was always going to be the film industry’s favourite. Nobody is thanking James Cameron right now, in fact, I think a few would have him trip and fall onto some painfully shaped candle holders as a punishment for ‘Avatar’ and the ridiculous trend in 3D movies that has followed.
