France Indo
Is it incorrect to call black an african american? what if the person is a black from Europe who lives in USA?

I sometimes perceive certain uneasiness in people when I refer to people of black race as “blacks” and not african americans. When I refer to Indo-european caucasians I call them whites and that seems to be ok, so why is it not in the case of blacks? so how am I supposed to call a black person from France..Euro-african??? that sounds just silly to me so please help!!

Well, sometimes conversation requires the distinguishing of groups. And it sometimes happens that one of the groups named is black people.
I guess that this is the whole problem we’re talking about, so ‘I prefer my name’ is not applicable here.
Or even in a discussion and you ask ‘Do you know ?’, you might get an answer like, “the one with the glasses/red hair/dark* skin?? *pick one. So just to show you there sometimes is a need for having a name.

Me, I’m not certain as well. On TV shows/news from the States I always hear “African-American”, even to the point of getting annoyed. I’m not black so I don’t know what I’d want to be called, but I, personally, say different things depending on the context. I’m writing a paper on Kenya where I have to distinguish between the black Kenyans and the Kenyans from Indian descent/Kenyans from India/Indian Kenyans. In Kenya they’re called Asians. Pretty simple, huh?
