Florin Great
I have this florin, and i was wondering if anyone knew exactly where it was from?
on one side it has:
A man in a cape/robe, holding a rod with a cross on top, in his left hand, and holding his right arm and hand out straight- with a scorpion in a pointed oval resting on top. It also has the letters around the outside .S.IOHA and NNES.B. at least that’s what it looks like. The only numbers i could see were what looks like 925.
On the other side:
is a flowery sorta design, it looks like the one on the florin image on www.umilta.net/wellesley.html.
It also has the letters FLOR and then EN…. the other few are kind of hard to tell.
its size is between a one a two dollar coin, closer to a two dollar.
And its gold.

It is very possible the first link below describes your coin. It was originally minted in Florence, Italy from 1252 until 1523. The inscriptions read “S.IOHAN NES.B” or “St. John the Baptist” and “FLOR ENTIA” which, I believe, is for either “Florence” and/or “fleur-de-lis.” The flower is a “fleur-de-lis” which is now more commonly associated with France. I am not sure what the “925″ might be. I would imagine a genuine example of this coin would be worth quite a bit though there are likely replicas and counterfeits available. You mention the size of the coin as between a one and two dollar, but Yahoo says your question originated in the United States therefore I can not tell to which country’s coins you refer.
