Do the goods the singer received as payment fulfill the four functions of money described?
There is a world tour by a singer. One stop on the tour was theater in somewhere. She performed for usual fee, which was one-third of the receipts. When counted, her share was found to consist of three pigs, twenty-three turkeys, forty-four chickens, five thousand cocoa-nuts, besides considerable quantities of bananas, lemons, and oranges. She estimated that all of this would have had a value in France of 4,000 francs. “as she could not consume any considerable portion of the receipts herself, it became necessary in the meantime to feed the pigs and poultry with the fruit”
Do the goods she received as payment fulfill the four functions of money described? Plz explain
The answer is no, but my textbook lists three instead of four functions of money.
Medium of exchange. This function is met, the singer accepted the payment.
Unit of account. This function is met because she can value the payment in terms of francs.
Store of value, liquidity. This function is definitely NOT met, because she had to use up the fruit, and she could not readily spend her share.
