Why was slavery established and why did it flourish in the world’s first modern democratic republic? How do you explain this apparent contradiction? How did supporters of slavery justify such an institution in a democratic republic?
What contradiction?
Slavery has existed for all of human history. It still exists today in some parts of the world.
When the United States was formed, slavery was legal all throughout the world. It wasn’t until 1807 that the British Empire banned slavery from anywhere in the Empire’s jurisdiction.
Your question belies a modern outlook on an issue which simply did not exist in those days. You might as well ask why they didn’t use cell phones and cable TV.
