Binary ionic compound questions?
why is CuCl2 called Copper(II)Chloride? Why is FeN called Iron(II)Chloride? I’m referring to the cations versus the anions, could someone explain the placement…simply please?
By convention the cation goes first. You must spifify the oxidation state of the metal copper(I) chloride, CuCl is also well known; it is understood that it is Cl^- so no need to state dichloride or monochloride. This is preferred over the older terms cuprous (Cu(I) and cupric (Cu(II).
Iron(II) chloride FeCl2 (old name ferrous chloride); Iron(III) chloride FeCl3 (old name: ferric chloride). Both are easily prepared.
