There is $610 worth of gold in one of these coins, as of today’s closing price of $1376 per Troy ounce.
In my opinion, the premium this seller is asking is ridiculous. These restrikes are not collector coins, they are bullion investment coins. That means you can buy them for a small markup over spot price, 10% or so, so you should be able to get one for close to $700.
The Austrian government has been cranking out these restrikes for years, and continues to make them today. With today’s improved technology, getting one to grade MS68 should not be that hard. Whether or not the population at MS68 is really 5 with none higher I can’t say, because I don’t have access to that information. But even if it is, this does not necessarily indicate rarity. All it means is that there have been five coins graded that high. You would need to see the figures for how many of this coin have been submitted. If there have been a thousand of them submitted so far and only 5 came back MS68, yes, that would be fairly scarce. But if only ten have been submitted, this means that, one, half of them graded in the top grade, which is a very high percentage, and two, it’s not a very popular coin to submit, or a lot more of them would be sent in.
Also, because Austria is still making these, the chances of the population numbers in MS68 growing are great, as more of them do get sent in. This will drive the value down.
I would stay far away from this coin at this price.
