Discover Australia

Was it really the Germans that discovered Australia?
I saw a program where they found german writing in the desert before the English arrived. Of course I’m talking about the first white people in the Island.
What do you know about this?
Thanks.
Well, i know that the Dutch knew there was a big chunk of land there, they mapped the north bit of it and called in New Holland, but made no attempt to colonies it.
The British sent James cook to map out the east coast of Australia, James Cook claimed Australia for Britain, before long hundreds of thousands of British convicts, mostly from large English cities such as London, were sent to Australia.
Australia was called so because its Latin for “South land” or something like that, i think even the romans had heard storys of a big island to the south.
