Why does racial distribution vary so much between Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Cuba?
despite having similar histories and cultures?
Dominican Republic – 73% mixed, 16% white, 11% black
Puerto Rico – 81% white, 11% mixed, 8% black,
Cuba – 65% white, 10% black, 25% mixed
Actually, the racial distributions of all three nations are pretty much warped from census info.
MOST of cuba (around 55%) is of mixed race, with roughly 15%Black and the remainder (30%) White. And in PR about half of those “White” people are really just mixed-race people who are lightskinned.
The thing is, in latin america if you’re fairskinned and can prove you had a white ancestor then you’re “white”, regardless as to whether or not you have Black ancestors or not. Cuba imported more slaves than the entire United States, and Puerto Rico’s population at various points in history was over 50% free black and mulatto-the highest of any colony.
The only reason racial distribution “varies” is because there are more people who can pass in Cuba and PR. Fewer dominicans can pass so we tend to hide under labels like “mixed” or “indio”.
In truth, if you actually went to Cuba and went beyond the tourist bullsh*t you’d see a whole mess of Black and Mulatto people, and the same goes for PR as well. Its just that there is a stigma attatched to being Black or calling yourself Black, so relatively few people do it. In truth, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are “Blacker” than even some English-Speaking caribbean nations like Trinidad and Guyana.
I’m a Black Dominican and I identify as such, despite the fact that my own government doesnt identify me as Black, but indio. I know people darker than me who consider themselves indio and not black.
