Meet The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dogs
The cavalier king charles spaniel is considered among the most popular toy dog breeds in the UK. The breed has grown in popularity in the United States since 2000. They are among the smaller spaniels. They have smooth and silky coats and undocked tails. The breed comes in four color varieties. The Blenheim is a beautiful red and white combination. The Tricolor is black, white and tan, the Ruby is a beautiful redhead and the Tan and black is just that.
These dogs originate from England. It was a combination of the King Charles Spaniel and some short nosed breeds, believed to include the pug. Between 1800 and 1920, the breed had another look. Afterwards breeders tried to reconfigure the dog to resemble the original spaniel.
During World War II the breed’s evolution declined. During the war, the majority of the breeding stock was destroyed. The original population decreased at only three dogs in the 40′s. After the war, there were six dogs that became the starting block which became the ancestors of all future Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
W. Lyon Brown and Elizabeth Spalding were the first to bring in the United States a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in 1956. Together they formed the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club. The club applied for recognition by the AKC which did not happen until 1997.
The dogs of the cavalier king charles spaniel breed are wonderful companions. The large brown eyes will melt the heart of the strongest of family members. These vivid dogs with their fluffy feet are quite easy to train, if you have patience and confidence.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are quite large for a toy breed. They were initially bred to be lap dogs. Nowadays they are still considered lap dogs as they require human company almost all the time. Most of the other spaniels are bigger than these 12 to 13 inches tall and 10 to 18 pounds weight dogs. These dogs have silky coats and beautifully feathered tails, ears and feet, that are permitted by the American Kennel Club to have straight hair with slight curls.
Many people find it hard to distinguish between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the English Toy Spaniel. UK breeders name the English Toy Spaniel also as the King Charles Spaniel. The Tan and black variety is known in the United States as the King Charles Spaniel. The two breeds do share a similar history and were one and the same until about one century ago. The English Toy Spaniel dogs are slightly smaller and their ears are not set as high on their skulls. The King Charles has a crown that is more domed. The muzzle of the Cavalier is slightly longer.
The dogs of this breed can be described as being very affectionate, eager to please, playful and quite patient. They will show no fear of larger dogs and can become accustomed easily to new surroundings and other dogs. They are the perfect dogs for families having different pets. They play a lot as they are quite nosy, and they also love to cuddle in your lap.
