Check Your Change for Some Great Collectible Coins
The introduction of the internet has completely turned around the way people find things to collect. You can find coins the old fashioned way too – it is surprising to see how many rare and expensive coins are actually in circulation even now.
Good coins for new collectors to start with would be the “wheat pennies”, which followed the popular Indian Head pennies and were produced between 1909 and 1958. The wheat penny is named for it’s design, which includes a pair of wheat stalk bundles on the back side of the coin, and a picture of Lincoln on the front side.
One especially interesting wrinkle is the steel/zinc penny from WWII. Because of a copper shortage during the war, the U.S. Mint produced pennies made from steel, then coated with zinc to prevent any rusting. Made in 1943, these coins are valuable both for their age and their rarity. They have a bluish gray tine, and a distinctive sound they make when they are hit, making it easier for you to tell them apart.
On examination of Lincoln wheat pennies, a lot of the them will have the initials of VDB on them, for the designer Victor David Brenner. The Ones that were minted in places other than Philadelphia are worth more, however these can be hard to find due to Philadelphia being the biggest mint at the time and produced a majority of the coins. Some of these one-cent pieces can sell for upwards of 700 dollars – not bad for a single cent! Many go for $15, still a good profit for a penny.
You can look for pennies, silver dimes, quarters and dollars in perfectly ordinary places. With the growing popularity of coin counting machines, these coins are often passed from bank to bank unnoticed. This is why you should always take a careful look at your change; most people aren’t interested in coin collecting, but you have a lot of opportunities as a collector to run across a find!
You don’t have to be a coin specialist to notice these unique coins if you stop and look closely at the pictures of them. It is possible that you might even find Eisenhower silver dollars.
The series of state quarters began production in 1999 and five new quarters are introduced each year. The project is due to end sometime in 2009, until then a new quarter comes out around every 10 weeks. The state quarters each have a unique design representative of a specific state.
The state quarters created in previous years of the program are no longer being produced, so they are sure to increase in value over time. The value of many of these quarters is already $2, which should increase since a coins circulation lasts about 30 years on average. If you began coin collection today, your collection may become worth some money in 10-20 years.
Coin collecting that is a great hobby, however it requires you to think long term. Your collection will grow more valuable with time; even a common coin from today could become a valuable collectible later in its life.
