A Nice Way To Spend Sunday Afternoon
We lead such busy lives these days that we get to spend far too little time with our children. During the week, we’re at work and they are at school. We spend Saturdays catching up on chores around the house while the kids catch up with their friends. That gives us only Sunday to spend together.
Many families make a point of making Sunday the family day. Everybody usually sleeps in and then gets together for a nice big Sunday breakfast or brunch. Finally, we might all go out and do something together. Sunday afternoon comes all too quickly.
A nice way to finish off Sunday is to bake a cake with the kids. Young children love to do this and the anticipation of a delicious cake for dessert is a big motivator. It’s especially fun if you make a game of it.
Start by letting them choose the shape of the cake you’re going to bake that day. It’s a good bet that the boys will choose your biggest square cake pans.
The girls, however, can be counted on to choose the heart cake pan. In order to avoid some serious conflicts of interest, you will probably have to step in and offer some solutions to the dilemma. You can flip a coin and the winners get their cakepan this week, the losers next week. Or you can see if they can agree on using the round pan.
Sit the kids down on wood bar stools, so they can be at working height. They can take turns mixing the cake batter. Once it’s all mixed together, put it in the oven and get to work on the icing.
Keep a watchful eye on the kids while they’re making icing. You want there to be some left over for the finished cake! Just to be safe, make a little extra, so they can all have a taste of their creation.
They might not be overjoyed about washing up time, but if you don’t mind them making a little bit of a mess while they’re cleaning, it can be fun, too. You will just need to tidy up a little after them.
While the cake cools, the kids can relax in front of the TV. When it comes time for icing the cake, they will definitely want to join in the fun.
Finally, after dinner, everybody can eat the cake together. What a fabulous way to finish off the weekend! If you’re lucky, you might even have a little left over to put in their school lunches the next day. That would be a perfect start to their week!
