Can you still invest with a quarter or even a tenth of a gold bullion coin?
i was thinking of buying one or two bullion coins but i dont have 1400 for an oz bullion i can afford the tenth or quarter only right now but is this smart like i was thinking of keeping them for like ten years and selling them ….. what should i do or any advice on how to turn this into a profit?/
Yes. Coins smaller than a full ounce are called fractional coins. Most popular gold bullion coins come in halves, quarters, and tenths. The gold American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, and Krugerrands can all be found in fractionals. If you are in the US, then the Gold Eagle is going to be the easiest to find in smaller sizes. Smaller Maples and Krugerrands are usually to rare for my taste.
Unfortunately, fractional bullion comes with higher premiums. If you buy a full one ounce Gold Eagle, for example, expect to pay about 5% over spot to a dealer. A tenth ounce Eagle, though, will probably sell for a 15% premium. The good news is that when you go to sell your bullion in ten years, you’ll likely get some of that premium back (although it depends where you sell, and what the markets done in the meantime).

I think you’ve already figured out how to turn a profit. The trick is to hold the bullion for a long time. Nobody knows if the market will be up or down in a few months, or even a year. Gold is basically at an all-time high right now. If you are planning to sell in one year, then gold may not be a good investment for you. However, if you are determined to hold onto it for a while, like 10 years, gold prices will almost certainly increase substantially. Just look at historical prices. Gold has quintupled in the last 10 years!
Another advantage to fractional gold is say gold prices rise to $7,500 per ounce in ten years (which is about the same increase gold has been going at long term). Now when gold gets that high, do you really want all that money trapped in one piece of gold, or split into 10 smaller pieces. I think in the future fractional will get a lot more common for that reason. A $750 tenth ounce coin should be a lot easier to sell than a $7,500 full ounce one.
Oh, and you may what to consider a small silver investing along side your gold. Silver has done very well, and actually performed better than gold in 2010. I’d recommend going with either generic rounds or Silver Eagles. There’s no rule to what percentage to split between gold and silver, just whatever you’re comfortable with. As long as you split some, you get the benefits of a little added diversification.
